Individual-level variation in reproductive effort in chestnut oak (Quercus montana Willd.) and black oak (Q. Velutina Lam.)

چکیده

Masting is a population-level reproductive strategy, where individuals synchronize large but intermittent seed production. Despite the high degree of synchrony at population level, there can be considerable variation in reproduction among (intraspecific variation). Here, we use 18 years acorn production data from individual chestnut oak and black control thinned stands, to understand what factors influence differences effort variability. We included variety tree-level measurements, environmental characteristics, measurements tree cores determine if certain characteristics were associated variations reproduction. considered both mean annual per m2 crown interannual (CV) as response variables. also classified super producers (i.e., those that consistently produce more acorns than others), good, fair poor less or have higher number failure years). In oak, 14% contributed 34% total acorns, while made up 35% trees only 16% (14% individuals) 31% (24% 9% acorns. Diameter breast height (DBH) was most consistent variable for explaining intraspecific variability larger had lower CV oak). Other variables influenced elevation clay content slope oak. found no significant effect thinning treatment on Our results illustrate how distinguish groups, which used inform management selective harvesting decisions.

Mating patterns of black oak Quercus velutina (Fagaceae) in a Missouri oak-hickory forest.

Wind-pollinated forest trees usually have high outcrossing rates, but allogamy does not necessarily translate into high pollen movement. The goal of this study was to determine the outcrossing rates, pollen pool genetic structure, and the size of the effective pollination neighborhood in a population of black oak, Quercus velutina, in a Missouri oak-hickory forest. Based on 6 allozyme loci, 12 ...

Phylogeographical variation of chloroplast DNA in cork oak (Quercus suber).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS In the last decades, the geographical location of the centre of origin of Quercus suber (cork oak), a strictly western Mediterranean oak species, has been the subject of controversy. METHODS RFLP variation over the whole chloroplast DNA molecule and PCR-RFLPs over seven specific cpDNA fragments were analysed phylogeographically to reconstruct the evolutionary history of co...

Additivity in tree biomass components of Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.)

In tree biomass estimations, it is important to consider the property of additivity, i.e., the total tree biomass should equal the sum of the components. This work presents functions that allow estimation of the stem and crown dry weight components of Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.) trees. A procedure that considers additivity of tree biomass components is presented, and applied to a pa...

Long-Term Seedling Height Growth and Compositional Changes Following Logging and Wildfire in a Central Pennsylvania Oak Forest

Overstory and understory data were collected over a 15-year period (1996–2011) before and after seed tree logging in 1996 and an accidental wildfire in 2006 in a young developing mixed-oak forest in central Pennsylvania. The mature forest overstory was dominated by chestnut oak (Quercus montana) followed by northern red oak (Quercus rubra), black oak (Quercus velutina), scarlet oak (Quercus coc...

Hotspot detection for chestnut oak regeneration

Chestnut oak regeneration hotspots were investigated in 52 mature mixed-oak stands in the central Appalachians. Four methods: ranking, SaTScan, ClusterSeer, and classification tree were applied to detect chestnut oak regeneration hotspots. Ranking method provided a quick assessment of the regeneration hotspot; SaTScan and ClusterSeer compromised the spatial correlation among the plots; classifi...
